Solar Panel Installation in Woodstock, NY

Woodstock is forest and mountain. The southern horizon decides more projects here than anything on the roof does.

A wooden house with a ground-mounted solar array in a clearing surrounded by dense Catskill forest near Woodstock New York

Woodstock sits in the Catskills in Ulster County, wrapped in forest below Overlook Mountain. ZIP code 12498. It is one of the harder places in New York to put solar on a roof, and one where the alternatives matter most.

Forest is the constraint

Dense mature hardwood cover and mountain terrain mean the southern horizon on a great many Woodstock properties is trees, a ridge, or both. The low December sun is what makes that decisive — an obstruction irrelevant in July removes hours of production in the month the credit balance is being drawn down.

An on-site shading assessment is not optional here, and a satellite estimate will not capture a mature canopy accurately. Ask what the model assumes about December and January rather than only the annual total, and treat a large gap between two installers’ figures as a sign that one of them has not been to the property.

Where the answer is that the roof will not work, that is a real answer rather than a negotiating position.

Ground mounts, and the tree question

Many Woodstock properties have land, and a ground mount sited in a clearing lets the array go where the sun is rather than where the roof happens to face. It also removes the roof-age question and allows ground-level maintenance and snow clearing.

If tree removal is proposed — for a roof array or to clear a ground-mount site — treat it as a decision rather than an assumption folded into a production estimate. It has real cost, sometimes a town permit, and on a wooded Woodstock property the trees are frequently a large part of why the owner is there.

Second homes and the credit

Woodstock has a substantial share of seasonal and weekend properties, and this decides a great deal: New York’s 25% credit on Form IT-255 is for equipment installed and used at your principal residence in New York State. A weekend house that is not your principal residence does not qualify.

Establish that before a proposal is built around a credit you cannot claim, and note that intermittent occupancy also changes sizing — a design from an annual average will not match a house used at weekends.

Central Hudson

The Customer Benefit Contribution is $1.67 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, the highest residential rate in New York — about $10.02 a month on a 6 kW system, roughly $120 a year. Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually.

Woodstock systems are often modest because of shading, so the charge is proportionally more noticeable here than on a large unshaded array elsewhere.

Snow and roofs

Catskill snow load is real: ask what the racking is specified for, whether snow guards are needed where the array discharges, and what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate. Roof age is the usual gate — under roughly ten years of shingle life left means re-roof first.

2026 incentives

The 30% federal residential credit is gone — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.

Still available for a principal residence: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where the town, Ulster County and your school district have not opted out, once you file form RP-487 with each assessor for your address by its taxable status date. NY-Sun is not on that list: as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one.

Where the forest rules a roof out entirely, community solar needs no roof and no clearing at all — and its subscribers pay no Customer Benefit Contribution, which is worth more in Central Hudson territory than anywhere else in the state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Woodstock too wooded for solar?

For a great many properties the roof will not work, and that is a real answer rather than a negotiating position. A ground mount sited in a clearing, or community solar which needs no roof at all, are the genuine alternatives.

Should I cut trees down for solar in Woodstock?

It is a decision with real cost, sometimes a town permit, and a permanent effect on a property where the trees are frequently a large part of why the owner is there. It should never be quietly assumed into a production estimate.

Can I claim the New York solar credit on a weekend house?

Only if it is your principal residence. Form IT-255 covers equipment installed and used at your principal residence in New York State, so a weekend or seasonal house does not qualify.

What does Central Hudson charge a Woodstock solar customer?

The Customer Benefit Contribution at $1.67 per kW-month of DC system size, the highest residential rate in New York — about $120 a year on a 6 kW system. Woodstock systems are often modest because of shading, so it is proportionally more noticeable.

Run the arithmetic on your own system

Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
