Solar Panel Installation in Colonie, NY
Colonie contains a town, a village of the same name and another village inside it. Establishing which issues your permit is the first step.
Colonie is the large suburban town wrapping the north and west of Albany. ZIP codes include 12205, 12110 and 12211. It is the most populous town in the Capital Region, and it has a permitting quirk worth settling before anything else.
Three authorities, similar names
The Town of Colonie, the Village of Colonie and the Village of Menands are separate municipal authorities with their own building departments, and the villages sit inside the town’s boundaries. Latham and Loudonville are hamlets of the town rather than villages, so they permit through the town.
Establish which authority covers your address before an installer files anything. Turnarounds and fee schedules differ, and a permit filed with the wrong department is time lost rather than a small correction.
Mid-century housing: two things to check
Much of Colonie was built between the 1950s and the 1970s, which raises two questions a newer subdivision does not.
The service panel. Older houses frequently have 100 amp service, and fitting a solar breaker can require a panel upgrade or a line-side tap. That is a real cost, and it should appear in the quote rather than as a change order after contract. Ask what your service is and whether the busbar has room.
Roof age and geometry. Ranch and split-level roofs are often simple and generous — good for solar. But the usual gate applies: under roughly ten years of shingle life left means re-roof first, because removing and reinstalling an array later costs considerably more than mounting on a bare roof.
Trees
Colonie’s older streets carry mature maple canopy, and the low December sun is what makes it decisive — an obstruction irrelevant in July removes hours of production in the month the net metering credit bank is being drawn down.
Insist on an on-site shading assessment rather than a satellite estimate, and ask what the model assumes about December and January specifically rather than only the annual total. A large gap between two installers’ figures usually means one of them has not been to the property.
National Grid
The Customer Benefit Contribution is $0.97 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, the lowest residential rate of New York’s seven investor-owned utilities — about $6.79 a month on a 7 kW system, roughly $81 a year. Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually.
Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years from interconnection.
Snow
Capital Region snow load is moderate. Ask what load the racking is specified for and whether snow guards are needed where the array discharges over a door, a walkway or a driveway — a full array shedding at once is a real hazard, and it is cheaper to design for than to retrofit.
2026 incentives
The 30% federal residential credit has ended — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.
Still available for a principal residence: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where the town or village, Albany County and your school district have not opted out, once you file form RP-487 with each assessor for your address by its taxable status date. NY-Sun is not on that list, and neither is its income-qualified Affordable Solar track: as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory, Affordable Solar included; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who issues a solar permit in Colonie?
The Town of Colonie, the Village of Colonie and the Village of Menands are separate authorities with their own building departments. Latham and Loudonville are hamlets of the town and permit through it. Establish which covers your address first.
Will a 1960s Colonie house need an electrical upgrade for solar?
Sometimes. Older houses frequently have 100 amp service, and fitting a solar breaker can require a panel upgrade or a line-side tap. Ask what your service is and whether the busbar has room, and get it in the quote rather than as a later change order.
What does National Grid charge a Colonie solar customer?
The Customer Benefit Contribution at $0.97 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, the lowest residential rate of the seven investor-owned utilities — about $81 a year on a 7 kW system.
Do I need snow guards?
Where the array discharges over a door, a walkway or a driveway, yes. A full array shedding at once is a real hazard, and designing for it costs far less than retrofitting after an incident.

Run the arithmetic on your own system
Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
