Solar Incentives in Cayuga County, NY
Cayuga County runs from Auburn down the length of Cayuga Lake. Roof age decides most projects here; land decides the rest.
Cayuga County stretches from Lake Ontario down the length of Cayuga Lake — Auburn, Weedsport, Union Springs, Aurora, Moravia, Fair Haven and a great deal of farmland. ZIP codes here begin 130 and 131.
Roof age is the gate in Auburn
Auburn’s housing is old, much of it pre-war. Solar modules last decades; asphalt shingles do not. If your shingles have under roughly ten years of life left, replace the roof before installing — removing and reinstalling an array later costs considerably more than mounting on a bare roof, and a leak under an array is a far more expensive problem than one on open shingles.
Older wood-frame roofs also draw a structural engineer’s letter more often than newer construction, and that is a real line item when a building department asks. Get the roof assessed by someone who is not selling you panels.
Outside the city, land changes the answer
Most of Cayuga County is farmland and rural lots, which makes a ground mount a genuine option rather than a theoretical one. It removes the roof-age question entirely — significant in a market where that is the usual constraint — lets orientation and tilt be chosen rather than inherited, solves shading by siting, and puts maintenance and any snow clearing at ground level.
Ask for one to be quoted alongside the roof rather than instead of it, and ask early about setbacks and foundation depth below the frost line.
If you farm here, note that a project to offset the farm’s own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal at the end of 2025. That is a live question for your accountant with your own figures — and a different question again from leasing ground to a developer, which is a decades-long agreement whose terms on decommissioning security, rent escalation, access routes and agricultural assessment matter far more than the headline rent.
National Grid
Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years from interconnection. The Customer Benefit Contribution — a monthly charge on the DC size of the system for anyone interconnecting on or after 1 January 2022 — is $0.97 per kW-month for 2026, the lowest of the major New York utilities: about $5.82 a month on a 6 kW system, roughly $70 a year.
Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually rather than fixed.
Snow and permits
Finger Lakes snow load is real though moderate by upstate standards, and racking must be specified for it. Ask what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate, and whether snow guards are needed where the array discharges.
The City of Auburn and the surrounding towns each run their own building departments with their own turnarounds. The utility step is identical everywhere; the municipal step is not.
2026 incentives
The 30% federal residential credit is gone. Section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.
Still available: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, non-refundable but carried forward five years and reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where the city or town, the county and your school district have not opted out. The RPTL 487 exemption is not automatic: file form RP-487 with your assessor by the taxable status date (March 1 in most towns; January 2 in Nassau towns; May 1 or June 1 in Westchester towns; set by charter in cities; usually January 1 in villages), and the system must be built before January 1, 2030 (RP-487 instructions).
NY-Sun is not on that list. As of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one. The last standard upstate residential block (Block 14, $0.15/W, NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid territories) closed on 17 December 2025, and the upstate Affordable Solar block for income-qualified households closed on 9 March 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What decides whether solar works in Auburn?
Usually the roof. Much of the city's housing is pre-war, so shingles with under roughly ten years of life left mean re-roofing comes first — removing and reinstalling an array later costs considerably more than mounting on a bare roof.
Is a ground mount practical in rural Cayuga County?
On most rural lots, yes. It removes the roof-age question entirely, lets orientation and tilt be chosen, solves shading by siting and allows ground-level maintenance and snow clearing. Ask about setbacks and foundation depth below the frost line.
What does National Grid charge a Cayuga County solar customer?
The Customer Benefit Contribution at $0.97 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, the lowest of the major New York utilities — about $70 a year on a 6 kW system.
Can a Cayuga County farm still claim a federal solar credit?
A project to offset the farm's own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal. It is a live question for your accountant with your own figures.

Independent New York solar research. We summarise NYSERDA, NY-Sun and federal programme rules from published sources and state plainly when a figure is an estimate. We are not a government agency and do not sell equipment.
Run the arithmetic on your own system
Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
