The Solar Dealer Fee in New York, Explained

The advertised rate on a solar loan is rarely the price of the money. The fee that pays for it is usually sitting inside the system price instead.

A dealer fee is what a solar finance company charges the contractor for offering you a below-market interest rate, and the contractor does not absorb it. It is added into the price of the system. That is the whole mechanism, and once you see it, a headline rate under one percent stops being impressive and starts being a number that has to be paid for somewhere.

Why the rate and the price cannot be read separately

Two quotes for identical equipment, one priced for cash and one priced with a subsidised loan, are not two prices for the same thing. The financed version carries the cost of buying the rate down, so comparing the loan’s rate against a credit union rate while ignoring the price difference compares the wrong two numbers.

The test is one question asked plainly, in writing, of every company that quotes you: what is the price if I pay cash, and what is the price with this finance product. If the second is materially higher for the same panels, inverter, racking and scope of work, the difference is the fee. Divide it by the cash price and you have the real cost of the cheap rate, expressed as a percentage you can compare against anything else.

Where it hides on the page

  • A monthly payment offered instead of a price. If the proposal leads with a payment and buries the system price, the fee has nowhere to be seen.
  • A price per watt that is higher than the same company’s cash quote. The equipment did not change.
  • A finance line described as a processing or origination charge inside the contract price rather than as a separate borrowing cost.
  • A rate that is far below what a secured consumer loan costs elsewhere. Money is not cheaper for solar than it is for anything else. Somebody paid for the difference and it was not the lender.

The re-amortisation trap, and why 2026 changed it

Many solar loans are written with a first period at a low payment on the assumption that you will pay down a large chunk of principal within a set number of months. If you do not make that payment, the balance re-amortises over the remaining term and the monthly figure steps up, sometimes sharply.

Historically that lump was the federal residential credit. It is gone. Section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, and an expenditure is treated as made when the original installation is completed, so a 2026 residential purchase claims nothing federally. Any payment schedule still built around a 30 percent federal paydown is describing money that will not arrive, and the payment after the step-up is the one you will actually live with. Ask for the schedule both ways: with the voluntary payment made and without it.

New York’s own credit does not fill that hole either. It is 25 percent of qualifying expenditure capped at $5,000, claimed on Form IT-255, it is not refundable, and it is limited by your actual New York State tax liability — so it arrives as a reduced tax bill on a schedule set by filing season, not as a cheque timed to your eighteenth payment.

What to do with the number once you have it

A dealer fee is not fraud and it is not always the wrong deal. It is a cost, and the only failure is paying it without knowing. Once you can express it as a percentage of the cash price, three comparisons become possible: the cash price paid outright, the cash price with a credit union or home equity loan, and the financed price at the subsidised rate. Run all three over the full term. In many cases the cash price plus ordinary borrowing wins, and in some it does not.

Whichever you choose, do not let the fee push you into a larger array to make the payment look better against a bigger notional saving. Under Phase One net metering exports are credited at the full retail rate, but an oversized array builds credits you never consume, and you still pay the Customer Benefit Contribution on capacity. An 11 kW array on Con Edison is 11 x $1.29 = $14.19 a month, roughly $170 a year, charged on DC size regardless of what the panels produce or how the system was financed.

The incentives that are actually working for you

NY-Sun is New York’s incentive for a residential system, applied by the contractor as a reduction in price, but as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one. If one opens, it should be visible as a line on the quote, and the loan should be sized against the price after it, not before. The state sales tax exemption applies to residential solar equipment, RPTL 487 exempts the system’s added value from property tax for 15 years, provided it is constructed before 1 January 2030 and the municipality, the county and the school district have each declined to opt out, and the state credit sits on top for a principal residence. None of those depend on the finance product. Confirm the current position with NYSERDA and your own assessor before signing, because incentive levels step down as regional blocks fill.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solar dealer fee?

It is what the finance company charges the contractor for offering a below-market interest rate. The contractor recovers it inside the system price, so the low rate is paid for by a higher price rather than by the lender.

How do I find out what the fee is?

Ask every company in writing for the cash price and the financed price for identical equipment and scope. The difference is the fee. Divided by the cash price it becomes a percentage you can compare against any other borrowing.

Why does my payment go up after the first year or so?

Many solar loans assume a large voluntary principal payment in the early months and re-amortise if it is not made. That lump used to be the federal credit, which no longer exists for a 2026 residential purchase, so ask for the schedule without it.

Is a dealer fee illegal in New York?

No. It is a cost, not a scandal, and the failure is paying it without knowing. Once you can state it as a percentage of the cash price you can compare the financed deal against cash plus a credit union or home equity loan.

Run the arithmetic on your own system

Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
