Solar Panel Installation in Greece, NY
Greece is a large post-war suburb on the Lake Ontario shore. Service capacity and lake exposure are the two things to settle early.
Greece is a large town on the Lake Ontario shore, north-west of Rochester in Monroe County. ZIP codes include 14612, 14615 and 14626. Mostly post-war suburban housing, with a lakefront edge that behaves differently.
Post-war housing: two checks
The service panel. 100 amp service is common in housing of this age, and fitting a solar breaker can require a panel upgrade or a line-side tap. This is the most frequent cost surprise on Monroe County installations. Ask what your service is and whether the busbar has room, and get the answer in the quote rather than as a change order.
Roof age and geometry. The usual gate is roughly ten years of remaining shingle life — under that, re-roof first, because removing and reinstalling an array later costs considerably more than mounting on a bare roof. On the positive side, ranch and split-level roofs here are frequently simple and generous, which fits more modules than a cut-up older roofline.
Lake Ontario: snow and wind
Two separate design questions come from the lake.
Snow. Monroe County takes real lake-effect accumulation. Ask what ground snow load the racking, attachments and roof structure are specified for, whether snow guards are needed where the array discharges over a door, a walkway or a driveway, and what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate. A model built on a downstate profile overstates the winter here.
Wind. Exposure near the shore is greater than inland, so ask what wind load the racking and attachments are rated for — not only the snow load. Near the water, hardware and outdoor enclosure ratings matter more as well.
Shading
The older streets carry mature canopy while the newer subdivisions are comparatively open. The low December sun is what makes an obstruction decisive, in the month the net metering credit bank is being drawn down. Insist on an on-site shading assessment rather than a satellite estimate, and ask what the model assumes for December and January specifically.
RG&E
The Customer Benefit Contribution — a monthly charge on the DC size of the system for anyone interconnecting on or after 1 January 2022 — is $1.31 per kW-month for 2026 on RG&E’s residential rate:
- A 7 kW system: $9.17 a month, about $110 a year.
- A 10 kW system: $13.10 a month, about $157 a year.
Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually. Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years from interconnection.
Confirm your utility from your own bill. Several villages in Monroe County — including Fairport, Spencerport and Churchville — run their own municipal electric utilities, where state net metering and this charge may not apply; ask your municipal utility for its own rules.
2026 incentives
The 30% federal residential credit is gone — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed. Any proposal still showing it is materially wrong, and that is the first thing to check on a quote.
Still available for a principal residence: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where the town, Monroe County and your school district have not opted out, if you file form RP-487 with the assessor by the taxable status date. NY-Sun and its Affordable Solar blocks for lower-income households are not on that list: as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Greece house need an electrical panel upgrade?
Often. 100 amp service is common in post-war Monroe County housing, and fitting a solar breaker can require a panel upgrade or a line-side tap. Ask what your service is and whether the busbar has room, and get it in the quote.
Does proximity to Lake Ontario change the design?
In two ways. Snow accumulation means asking what ground snow load the racking and roof structure are specified for, and wind exposure near the shore means asking what wind load the attachments are rated for, not only the snow load.
What does RG&E charge a Greece solar customer?
The Customer Benefit Contribution at $1.31 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026 — about $110 a year on a 7 kW system and $157 on 10 kW. Confirm your utility from your own bill.
Is everyone in Monroe County on RG&E?
No. Fairport, Spencerport and Churchville run their own municipal electric utilities, where state net metering and the Customer Benefit Contribution may not apply; ask the village utility for its own rules.

Run the arithmetic on your own system
Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
