A dairy farm with a ground-mounted solar array and wind turbines on the ridge behind, rolling farmland in western New York

Wyoming County sits in the rolling farmland between Buffalo and the Southern Tier — Warsaw, Attica, Perry, Arcade, Castile. ZIP codes here begin 145 and 140. It is dairy country, and it is one of the parts of New York most familiar with large renewable projects already.

Open ground is the advantage

Rolling but largely cleared farmland gives a clear southern horizon on a great many properties, which removes the shading constraint that dominates most of New York.

That makes ground mounts straightforward — orientation and tilt chosen freely, roof age irrelevant, maintenance and snow clearing at ground level. Ask for one alongside the roof option, and ask about setbacks and foundation depth below the frost line.

On exposed ridge ground, ask what wind load the structure is specified for as well as the snow load. This is a county where wind is taken seriously for good reason.

Farm solar: two decisions, kept apart

Solar to offset the farm’s own consumption — milking parlour, cooling, ventilation, the shop — sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal at the end of 2025. That is a live question in 2026 for your accountant with your own figures.

Get interval data from the utility rather than bill totals: on a commercial account the shape of the load is the analysis, and a dairy’s load runs early and late rather than at midday, which changes what solar offsets. Ask any proposal to separate energy savings from demand savings, and note that a commercial account already carrying a demand charge is exempt from the Customer Benefit Contribution.

Leasing ground to a developer is a decades-long agreement and this county has seen many. Term length and who controls renewals, decommissioning security backed by a bond or escrow rather than a promise, the array footprint and access route, effects on drainage and tile, rent escalation, the option period, and consequences for agricultural assessment all matter more than the headline rent. Take your own attorney — a county with existing projects also has neighbours who have been through it, and their experience is worth asking about.

National Grid

The Customer Benefit Contribution is $0.97 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, the lowest of the major New York utilities — about $7.76 a month on an 8 kW system, roughly $93 a year. Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually. Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years.

Snow and roofs

Western New York snow load is real and racking must be specified for it; ask what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate. Roof age is the usual residential gate: under roughly ten years of shingle life left means re-roof first.

2026 incentives

The 30% federal residential credit has ended — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.

Still available: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption, which covers the 4% state tax only: Wyoming County still charges its own 4% local sales tax on residential solar (Publication 718-S, Part 1); and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where your town or village, the county and your school district have not opted out. The exemption needs a system built before 1 January 2030 and form RP-487 filed with your assessor by the taxable status date (March 1 in most towns; your assessor confirms yours).

Not available for homes now: NY-Sun. As of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory. In its Upstate region the last standard residential block (Block 14, $0.15/W), for NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid territory, closed on 17 December 2025, and the Affordable Solar block for lower-income households closed on 9 March 2026. Check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one before counting on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wyoming County good ground for solar?

Rolling but largely cleared farmland gives a clear southern horizon on many properties, which removes the shading constraint that dominates most of New York and makes ground mounts straightforward.

How does a dairy farm's load affect a solar proposal?

A dairy runs early and late rather than at midday, which changes what solar actually offsets. Get interval data rather than bill totals, and ask the proposal to separate energy savings from demand savings.

Do commercial farm accounts pay the Customer Benefit Contribution?

Commercial accounts that already carry a demand charge are exempt from it. Whether your account carries one is worth establishing early, because it also changes what solar is worth.

What should I check before leasing land to a solar developer?

Term length and renewal control, decommissioning security backed by a bond or escrow, the footprint and access route, effects on drainage and tile, rent escalation, the option period, and agricultural assessment consequences. In a county with existing projects, ask neighbours who have been through it.

Run the arithmetic on your own system

Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
