Solar Incentives in Montgomery County, NY
Amsterdam and the Mohawk Valley mill towns have some of the oldest housing in the state. The roof decides the timing here more than anything else.
Montgomery County runs along the Mohawk River west of Schenectady — Amsterdam, Canajoharie, Fonda, Fultonville, St. Johnsville, Palatine Bridge. ZIP codes here begin 120 and 130. It is old mill-town country with farmland behind it, and both halves shape solar here.
Roof age is the gate
Amsterdam and the valley villages carry housing that is old even by upstate standards, much of it nineteenth century. Solar modules last decades; asphalt shingles do not.
If your shingles have under roughly ten years of life left, replace the roof before installing. Removing and reinstalling an array later costs considerably more than mounting on a bare roof, and a leak under an array is a far more expensive problem than one on open shingles. On the household budgets typical here, that second cost is not one anyone plans for.
Older wood-frame roofs also draw a structural engineer’s letter more often than newer construction, and that is a genuine line item when a building department asks. Get the roof assessed by someone who is not selling you panels — the most useful independent opinion in the process.
National Grid: the lowest solar charge of the major New York utilities
The Customer Benefit Contribution — a monthly charge on the DC size of the system for anyone interconnecting on or after 1 January 2022 — is $0.97 per kW-month for 2026, the lowest of the major New York utilities. A 5 kW system pays $4.85 a month, about $58 a year; a 6 kW system $70.
Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years from interconnection.
Farmland behind the valley
Away from the river the county is agricultural, which opens two options a village lot does not have. A ground mount removes the roof-age question entirely, lets orientation and tilt be chosen and allows ground-level maintenance and snow clearing. And for a working farm, a project to offset the farm’s own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal at the end of 2025 — an accountant’s question with your own figures, and a live one.
Leasing ground to a developer is a different decision entirely, and its terms on decommissioning security, rent escalation, access, drainage and agricultural assessment matter far more than the headline rent. Use your own attorney.
Snow
Mohawk Valley snow load is real though moderate by upstate standards. Ask what load the racking is specified for, whether snow guards are needed where the array discharges, and what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate.
2026 incentives
The 30% federal residential credit is gone. Section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed. On a tight budget a quote still showing a 30% federal line understates the net cost by thousands.
Still available:
- New York’s 25% credit, capped at $5,000, on Form IT-255 — non-refundable but carried forward five years, which matters where tax liability is modest.
- The state sales tax exemption on residential solar equipment.
- RPTL 487, the 15-year property tax exemption, where your town or city, the county and your school district have not opted out. The RPTL 487 exemption is not automatic: file form RP-487 with your assessor by the taxable status date (March 1 in most towns; January 2 in Nassau towns; May 1 or June 1 in Westchester towns; set by charter in cities; usually January 1 in villages), and the system must be built before January 1, 2030 (RP-487 instructions).
NY-Sun is not on that list. As of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one. The last standard upstate residential block (Block 14, $0.15/W, NYSEG, RG&E and National Grid territories) closed on 17 December 2025, and the upstate Affordable Solar block for income-qualified households closed on 9 March 2026.
If the roof must come first, community solar in National Grid territory needs no roof, no equipment and no up-front cost, and its subscribers pay no Customer Benefit Contribution at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
What decides whether solar works in Amsterdam NY?
Usually the roof. The valley housing is old even by upstate standards, so shingles with under roughly ten years of life left mean re-roofing comes first — and on typical local budgets the cost of removing and reinstalling an array later is not one anyone plans for.
What extra help is available for lower-income households here?
Not from NY-Sun at the moment. The upstate Affordable Solar block for income-qualified households closed on 9 March 2026, and as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA's NY-Sun dashboard for a new one. What NYSERDA does offer now is Statewide Solar for All: households enrolled in their utility's Energy Assistance Program (EAP) get a monthly community-solar credit on their electric bill, with no upfront cost or fees, and enrolment in EAP enrolls you automatically. Community solar in National Grid territory needs no roof, no equipment and no up-front cost.
Can a Montgomery County farm claim a federal solar credit?
A project to offset the farm's own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal. It is a live question for your accountant with your own figures.
What if I cannot afford both a new roof and solar?
Community solar in National Grid territory needs no roof, no equipment and no up-front cost, and its subscribers pay no Customer Benefit Contribution. For a household in that position it is the better arrangement for the next several years.

Run the arithmetic on your own system
Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
