Solar Panel Installation in Penfield, NY

Penfield has land and trees in roughly equal measure. That combination makes the ground mount a serious option rather than a fallback.

A house with a ground-mounted solar array in a clearing on a large wooded lot in Monroe County New York

Penfield is a town in Monroe County, east of Rochester. ZIP code 14526. Larger lots than the inner-ring suburbs, with substantial tree cover on many of them — and that pairing changes what the best answer is.

Trees and land, together

On a small shaded lot, heavy canopy simply limits what is possible. On a larger Penfield property it does something different: it makes the roof a poor host while leaving open ground elsewhere on the parcel.

That is the case where a ground mount stops being a fallback and becomes the better design:

  • Shading is solved by siting — the array goes where the sun is, rather than where the roof happens to face.
  • Orientation and tilt are chosen rather than inherited from the building.
  • The roof-age question disappears entirely — no re-roof first, no removal and reinstallation in fifteen years.
  • Maintenance and snow clearing happen at ground level, which in Monroe County is worth more than it sounds.
  • It avoids removing trees you would otherwise have to remove.

Ask for a ground mount to be quoted alongside the roof option, and ask early about setbacks, site plan review, foundation depth below the frost line, and clearance beneath the lowest row — an array set too low is buried by drifted snow for weeks.

If the roof is the answer

Insist on an on-site shading assessment measured from the roof plane, and ask what the model assumes for December and January rather than only the annual total. The low winter sun is what makes an obstruction decisive, in the month the net metering credit bank is being drawn down.

On a partly shaded roof, per-panel electronics — microinverters or DC optimisers — contain a loss to the affected panel rather than letting it drag on a whole string.

Roof age is the usual gate: under roughly ten years of shingle life left means re-roof first. Ask also what your electrical service is and whether the busbar has room for a solar breaker.

Tree removal is a decision

If it is proposed, it should be presented as your choice with its own cost, not folded silently into a production estimate. It may need a permit, and on a wooded Penfield property the trees are frequently a large part of why the owner is there. On a lot with open ground, a ground mount is the option that keeps both.

Snow

Monroe County lake-effect snow is significant. Ask what ground snow load the racking, attachments and roof structure are specified for, whether snow guards are needed where a roof array discharges over a door or a walkway, and what snow-cover assumption is in the production estimate.

RG&E

The Customer Benefit Contribution is $1.31 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026 — about $11.79 a month on a 9 kW system, roughly $141 a year, or $18.34 on a 14 kW ground mount, about $220.

Billed on capacity regardless of production and recalculated annually, so a larger ground mount costs more per month whatever the weather does — put it in the arithmetic rather than discovering it on a bill. Phase One net metering credits exports at the full retail rate and holds for 20 years from interconnection.

Confirm your utility from your own bill: several Monroe County villages, including neighbouring Fairport, run their own municipal electric utilities, with their own metering and interconnection rules.

2026 incentives

The 30% federal residential credit is gone — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.

Still available for a principal residence: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption where the town, Monroe County and your school district have not opted out, if you file form RP-487 with the assessor by the taxable status date. NY-Sun is not on that list: as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a ground mount better than a roof in Penfield?

On a large wooded lot, frequently. It solves shading by siting the array where the sun is, lets orientation and tilt be chosen, removes the roof-age question, puts snow clearing at ground level, and avoids removing trees.

What should I ask about a ground mount here?

Setbacks, whether site plan review applies, foundation depth below the frost line, and clearance beneath the lowest row — an array set too low is buried by drifted snow for weeks in Monroe County.

Should I cut trees down for a roof array?

It should be presented as your decision with its own cost, never folded silently into a production estimate. On a Penfield lot with open ground, a ground mount usually keeps both the trees and the production.

What does RG&E charge on a Penfield ground mount?

The Customer Benefit Contribution at $1.31 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026 — about $141 a year on 9 kW and $220 on a 14 kW ground mount, billed on capacity regardless of production.

Run the arithmetic on your own system

Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
