Solar Incentives in Yates County, NY

Yates County is small, agricultural and built around Keuka Lake. Farm projects and off-grid design both come up here more than elsewhere.

Yates County is one of New York’s smallest — Penn Yan, Dundee, Rushville and the farmland and vineyards around Keuka Lake. ZIP codes here begin 145 and 144. It is agricultural, thinly populated, and two kinds of project come up here more than in most counties.

Lake slopes and orientation

Keuka Lake’s branching shape means properties face in every direction, and the slopes above it are steep in places. Which way your roof faces and what sits to the south of it matters more than the county-level weather.

Insist on an on-site shading assessment, and ask what the model assumes about December and January. Where the roof faces the wrong way — common on lakeside properties oriented to the view rather than to the sun — a ground mount lets the array be aimed properly instead, and most properties here have the land for one.

Farm and vineyard projects

A project to offset a farm’s or a winery’s own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal at the end of 2025. That is a live question in 2026 for your accountant with your own figures.

Get interval data from the utility rather than bill totals: on a commercial account the shape of the load is the analysis. A winery’s load runs hard at harvest and through cold storage rather than evenly, which changes what solar offsets, and any proposal should separate energy savings from demand savings. A commercial account already carrying a demand charge is exempt from the Customer Benefit Contribution.

Leasing ground to a developer is a separate decades-long decision, and its terms on decommissioning security, rent escalation, access routes, drainage and tile, the option period and agricultural assessment matter more than the headline rent. Use your own attorney.

Properties without service

In a county this rural some properties sit a long way from a line, and extending service can cost more than a standalone system. Off-grid is a different discipline from grid-tied solar: battery-first, generator-backed, and sized for the worst week rather than the annual average. None of the net-metering arrangements described elsewhere on this site apply to it.

If that is your situation, say so at the first conversation — an installer who mainly fits grid-tied rooftop systems is not necessarily the right firm.

The utility and interconnection

Confirm which utility serves you from your own bill; this county sits near a service boundary. Where NYSEG serves you, the Customer Benefit Contribution is $1.19 per kW-month of DC system size for 2026, about $9.52 a month on an 8 kW system.

Long rural feeders are where interconnection applications hit hosting-capacity limits. Ask whether it was checked for your circuit before designing, and settle in writing what happens to your deposit if a study or upgrade is required.

Roofs and snow

Roof age is the usual residential gate: under roughly ten years of shingle life left means re-roof first. Finger Lakes snow load is real though moderate by upstate standards — ask what the racking is specified for and what snow assumption is in the production estimate.

2026 incentives

The 30% federal residential credit is gone — section 25D was terminated for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed.

Still available: New York’s 25% credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255, reaching leases and PPAs of ten years or more as well as purchases; the state sales tax exemption; and RPTL 487’s 15-year property tax exemption, claimed on form RP-487 filed with your assessor by the taxable status date, where your town or village, the county and your school district have not opted out. NY-Sun and its Affordable Solar track are not: as of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Keuka Lake's shape affect solar orientation?

Yes. Its branching form means properties face in every direction, and lakeside houses are frequently oriented to the view rather than the sun. Where the roof faces wrong, a ground mount lets the array be aimed properly instead.

How should a winery analyse a solar proposal?

From interval data rather than bill totals, because a winery's load runs hard at harvest and through cold storage rather than evenly. Ask the proposal to separate energy savings from demand savings, and note that an account with a demand charge is exempt from the CBC.

Is off-grid solar realistic in Yates County?

For properties far from a line where extending service costs more than a standalone system, yes — but it is a different discipline: battery-first, generator-backed, sized for the worst week, and none of the net-metering arrangements apply.

Can a Yates County farm claim a federal solar credit?

A project to offset the farm's own consumption sits on the business side of the tax code, where the investment tax credit and depreciation did not follow the residential credit into repeal. It is a live question for your accountant.

Run the arithmetic on your own system

Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
