What Solar Panels Cost in Babylon, NY
In Babylon the price of a solar installation is set less by the panels than by which authority issues your permit and what the house was wired for in 1955.

Panels and inverters cost roughly the same in Babylon as anywhere else in New York. What moves the number on a Babylon quote is the rest of it: which authority issues the permit, what PSEG Long Island requires to interconnect, whether the property sits in a coastal flood zone, and what the house was wired for when it was built. Two identical roofs a mile apart can price several thousand dollars apart for those reasons alone, so an installer who cannot explain which of them apply to your address is quoting a template.
The permit depends on which Babylon you live in
This is the local fact that catches out installers from off the island. The Town of Babylon issues permits for the unincorporated areas, which includes North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wyandanch and Copiague. The incorporated villages of Babylon, Lindenhurst and Amityville run their own building departments and their own review. A quote that assumes the town process for a village address has the wrong fee, the wrong inspection sequence and usually the wrong timeline.
The NYS Unified Solar Permit standardises residential permitting for systems of 25 kW DC and under and has been adopted by more than 300 authorities having jurisdiction across the state. Ask directly whether your jurisdiction uses it, which form is being filed, and who pulls the permit. The answer belongs in the contract rather than in a conversation.
PSEG Long Island, and the charge that follows the array forever
Babylon is served by PSEG Long Island, which operates the LIPA system. The Customer Benefit Contribution for LIPA residential customers is $1.13 per kW-month in 2026, charged on DC system size regardless of production. An 8.5 kW array pays $9.61 a month, roughly $115 a year, and it is due whether the month was sunny or not. It applies to systems interconnected on or after 1 January 2022 and is recalculated annually rather than locked at interconnection. Ask for it to appear in the payback model as an annual operating cost, because a model that omits it flatters the result for twenty years at a time.
Confirm the utility from the name printed on your own bill rather than from a service territory map. The point is not theoretical on Long Island, where a number of villages are served by their own electric systems rather than by PSEG Long Island. Those systems sit outside Public Service Commission jurisdiction entirely, which means no state net metering, no Customer Benefit Contribution and no state interconnection process, and their customers have to ask the utility itself for its terms.
Coastal work that a generic quote does not include
South of Montauk Highway, and along the canals running to the Great South Bay, flood mapping starts to matter. Ask two questions: what the flood zone designation is for the parcel, and where the inverter, disconnect and any battery are to be mounted relative to it. Equipment placed low in a garage on a canal street is a problem waiting for a storm surge, and moving it later is not a small job.
Wind exposure is the other coastal cost. A roof closer to open water carries a heavier attachment schedule, which means more penetrations, more flashing and sometimes an engineering letter. That is real work rather than a padded line, but it is also a line that should be visible and explained rather than absorbed into a round number.
What the housing stock adds
Much of Babylon is postwar: capes and ranches built in the 1950s, many of them expanded since. Three consequences show up repeatedly in quotes here.
- 100 amp service. Common in houses of that vintage and frequently too little once a solar breaker, and perhaps a heat pump or an EV charger, are added. A service upgrade is a separate cost and it should be priced before the array is designed, not discovered during inspection.
- Roof age and layers. If the roof has two layers of shingle, both come off before an array goes on. A roof with under ten years left should be replaced first, because removing and reinstalling panels later costs more than doing it in the right order.
- Modest roof planes. Cape dormers and additions break a roof into small faces at different angles, and the usable area is often smaller than the satellite tool suggests.
Reading a Babylon quote
The ZIP codes here run 11702 for Babylon village, 11703 for North Babylon, 11704 for West Babylon, 11701 for Amityville, 11757 for Lindenhurst, 11726 for Copiague, 11729 for Deer Park and 11798 for Wyandanch. Whichever one you are in, ask for the quote itemised: equipment, labour, electrical upgrades, roof work and permit fees, each on its own line rather than folded into a discounted price, and if a NY-Sun incentive appears on it, ask which open block it comes from. If a financed offer carries a strikingly low interest rate, ask for the cash price beside it. The difference is a dealer fee inside the system price, and it is usually thousands.
Incentives that change the Babylon number
Residential solar equipment and its installation are exempt from the 4% state sales tax and the MCTD tax, and from local sales tax only where the county or city has enacted the exemption; the state’s Publication 718-S lists Suffolk County among those that have. The exemption means no sales tax is added to a pre-tax quote, not a deduction from the price, so ask what the tax line assumes. NY-Sun is not available: the last Long Island residential block closed on 17 April 2016. As of September 2026 NYSERDA has no open NY-Sun block for homes in any utility territory; check NYSERDA’s NY-Sun dashboard for a new one. New York’s 25 percent credit capped at $5,000 on Form IT-255 follows at tax time for a principal residence. RPTL 487 exempts the added value for fifteen years where the town, Suffolk County and your school district have each not opted out, and Babylon has several school districts that decide separately, so check yours by name. Section 487 also requires the system to be constructed before 1 January 2030. No 2026 quote should show a 30 percent federal credit: section 25D ended for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, treated as made when the original installation is completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who issues a solar permit in Babylon?
The Town of Babylon for unincorporated areas such as North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wyandanch and Copiague. The villages of Babylon, Lindenhurst and Amityville run their own building departments with their own fees and timelines.
What does PSEG Long Island charge solar customers?
The Customer Benefit Contribution, $1.13 per kW-month for LIPA residential customers in 2026, billed on DC system size regardless of output. An 8.5 kW array pays about $9.61 a month, and the rate is recalculated annually.
Why do Babylon quotes vary so much?
Electrical service upgrades on 1950s houses, roof condition and layer count, coastal wind attachment requirements and flood zone equipment placement. Ask for those as itemised lines rather than accepting one round number.
Is the federal tax credit still in the price?
It should not be. Section 25D ended for expenditures made after 31 December 2025, with an expenditure treated as made when the original installation is completed. A 2026 quote showing 30 percent federal is materially wrong.

NY Solar Incentives
Independent New York solar research. We summarise NYSERDA, NY-Sun and federal programme rules from published sources and state plainly when a figure is an estimate. We are not a government agency and do not sell equipment.
Run the arithmetic on your own system
Check the dated program table and your arrangement before counting an incentive. Standard residential NY-Sun blocks are closed; Long Island Affordable Solar has a conditional income-verification route. The NY credit depends on qualified costs and tax liability, while the NYC abatement reduces future property-tax bills. The estimator keeps those timings separate.
